No matter what your budget is, you always want to get the biggest bang for your buck. After all, who doesn’t love a designer look at half the cost? Yet, how do you know when to invest and when to buy second-hand?
Here are 3 places where you should invest and 3 places where you can skimp when you’re redecorating your home.
Where to Invest
- Focal Point
Every room has a focal point, the area of the room that first draws your attention. For example, the bed is the focal point of any bedroom. If you want to walk into your bedroom and feel like you’ve entered your design dreams, invest in a beautiful bed.
That doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on new bedroom furniture (see Tip #1 under “Where to Skimp” below). However, it does mean you should invest in a high-quality set of sheets and a luxurious comforter. Cheap bedding makes a bedroom look really cheap while quality bedding can transform an entire room. For instance, a premium set of bamboo sheetsand a silk comforter instantly make the whole room look more expensive without breaking the bank.
The same principle applies in any room of your house. If you’re redecorating your living room, recover your couch in high-quality fabric to take the whole room to the next level. If you’re redecorating your kitchen, spend a little extra for a professional finish on your cabinets.
- Window Treatments
The second place you should invest in is your window treatments. Thin, flimsy curtains always look second-rate. However, rich, thick curtains exude luxury.
If you’re really crafty and you bought high quality curtains the last time you decorated, use your old curtains as the base for your new window treatments. All you need to do is replace the top layer with high quality fabric that matches your new design. The old curtains will give your window treatments the necessary weight to look lavish while still saving you a pretty penny.
- Oversized Art or a Large Mirror
Finally, investing in a piece of oversized art of a large mirror is a quick and easy way to make any room look more expensive than it really is. While large art and mirrors are a little pricier, they really bring a design together and add just a touch of polish to make a room shine.
Where to Skimp
Good quality furniture can last for decades. However, you don’t have to go to a high-end store to find it. Often the best furniture is an older piece that you find in a thrift store or second-hand shop. A good rule of thumb is the heavier the furniture, the longer it will last.
While it’s true that you won’t have as big a selection if you shop second-hand, you actually don’t need a wide range of options. You can turn almost any piece of furniture into your dream design simply by refinishing it and adding some new hardware.
Here are some great DIY instructions on how to refinish wood furniture.
High-end decorators like to use high quality paint. They argue that it lasts longer and provides more even coverage in fewer coats, which is all true.
However, even a high quality paint job won’t last more than 7-10 years. Furthermore, paint colors are quick to go in and out of style. Many people repaint every five years to keep their home looking fresh and up-to-date.
Additionally, you just need to add an extra coat of paint or two to have the coverage you want if you’re using low-priced paint – it’s as simple as that so you really don’t need to use expensive paint.
The final reason you can skimp on your paint is because your walls should be a neutral color that provides an elegant backdrop for your more colorful accent pieces. People hardly ever look closely at the background, so it’s safe to go with a cheaper option.
Lamps, throw pillows, and tchotchkes are the first thing to be swapped out when you’re doing small updates to a room. They’re also the first things to wear out or become damaged, especially if you have kids or pets. Therefore, they’re not the items you want to spend money on. Just buy something colorful and inexpensive that you love and don’t worry about quality.
