Tencel is the brand name of lyocell and modal fabrics, like the way Chapstick has become the commonplace term for lip balm. This fabric is incredibly soft yet durable and also eco-friendly.
According to Tencel.com, Tencel fabric is made of “cellulosic fibers of botanic origin.” What does that mean, exactly? Tencel fabric starts as sustainable wood pulp and is then turned into fiber, yarn, and fabric. It is compostable and biodegradable, and therefore, considered to be eco-friendly. Tencel fabric production uses a closed-loop production process, which sustains a low environmental impact and contributes to less waste overall.
In addition to being known for its softness, Tencel fabric is:
Ideal for hot sleepers or those who live in warmer climates: Sheets made with Tencel are breathable and temperature regulating.
Gentle on skin: Tencel doesn’t trap bacteria like some other fabrics and is less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
Stylish and comfortable: Tencel fabric feels silky to the touch. It wrinkles less often than cotton and drapes nicely on a bed. It also holds dye well, meaning it can withstand bright, vibrant colors.
When searching for clothing or sheets that are gentle on the environment and also on the skin, Tencel fabric is a great way to go. We also like bamboo viscose sheets, but we might be a little biased.
