How to Wash Bamboo Sheets

Washing sheets, duvet covers, and pillow covers made of viscose from bamboo is simple, but there are some best practices that can increase the longevity of your bedding as you learn how to wash bamboo sheets. Since bamboo’s tensile strength is stronger than steel, you don’t need to be as careful with it as you would when caring for silk.

  • Don’t wash bamboo bedding with harsh chemicals that can break down the fibers
  • Avoid bleach, vinegar-based products, and harsh chemicals
  • Use cool water on a gentle cycle
  • Don’t use fabric softeners
  • Don’t wash bamboo sheets with towels – this will keep your sheets from getting linty
  • When drying use a low heat setting and add dryer balls to your comforter and sheets

How to Take Care of Your Bamboo Bedding

Bamboo fabric is remarkably easy to care for, and with some simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to properly washing your bedding, so it still looks fresh years down the road. Here are some quick and simple instructions on how to wash other bedding made of bamboo viscose.

How to Care for Comforters Made of Viscose From Bamboo

Cleaning your bamboo comforter is a little trickier. You could follow the same instructions above (machine wash cold, normal detergent, no fabric softer, and no bleach) and just make sure your machine is set to NO SPIN. You can even toss it into the dryer on a low heat setting if you want. However, the best method to clean a bamboo comforter is to use sun curing.

Sun Curing Bamboo Comforters

Simply hang your comforter in direct sunlight for a few hours. The sun dries out any body oils or moisture sitting on the surface of your comforter. Although this method doesn’t remove stains, it does refresh your bedding.

Commonly Asked Questions About Caring for Bamboo Viscose Bedding

Here are some of our most commonly asked questions when it comes to caring for our products made of viscose from bamboo.

How Do You Deep Clean Bamboo Sheets?

Similar to other materials, the best way to deep clean bamboo sheets is to soak them in room temperature water with a gentle detergent overnight or at minimum for a few hours. Then wash them as you normally would, with cool water on a gentle cycle.

Can Bamboo Sheets Shrink?

Yes, bamboo fibers can shrink, so it’s best to avoid high temperatures. Use cool or room temperature water when washing your sheets, and keep your drying cycle on the lowest heat setting. If you’re really concerned about bamboo viscose products shrinking, hang them in the sunshine to dry.

Will Fabric Softener Ruin Bamboo Bedding?

Most fabric softeners are made of harmful chemicals that break down fibers. Since viscose made from bamboo is already extremely soft, it’s best to avoid fabric softeners that can shorten the lifespan of bamboo fabric. A safer alternative is baking soda - chemically known as sodium bicarbonate. It is a natural deodorizer, and it is much more gentle than other chemical-filled laundry products. It will also make your whites brighter, so your sheets will feel softer and look cleaner. You can add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your laundry load as an alternative to fabric softener.

What’s the Best Detergent for Bamboo Sheets?

A mild, fragrance-free detergent is best for bamboo sheets and it’s important to avoid hydrogen peroxide-based detergents like Oxy-clean or Boost, as well as bleach and vinegar.
