A Guide to Hypoallergenic Bedding

We know you’ve heard the term “hypoallergenic,” but you might still be wondering: what is hypoallergenic bedding, exactly? In short, it refers to bedding made from materials that are less likely to attract or hold onto common allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and mold.

Hypoallergenic Bedding Materials

Hypoallergenic bedding is typically crafted from natural materials like bamboo, organic cotton, wool, silk, and eucalyptus. Natural fibers with a tight weave are important to keep allergens out and prevent allergic reactions. Of course, regular washing is still essential, but using materials that are naturally resistant to allergens can make a noticeable difference between washes, especially for those with sensitivities.

Tips to Create the Ideal Sleep Environment

If you’re one of the 74% of allergy sufferers who wake up during the night due to symptoms, we recommend the following to help keep the sneezing and stuffiness at bay while you enjoy restful nights:

  • Wash sheets regularly. If you wake up feeling stuffy or sneezy, it’s probably time to wash or change your sheets.

  • Sanitize pillows in the dryer on high for at least 30 minutes to kill dust mites and more. Pro tip: check your pillow’s care instructions to make sure they can handle high heat first! If they can’t, dry on medium heat for 60 minutes or low heat for 90 minutes.

  • Use a mattress protector and pillow protectors. While you might think of hard, loud, or crunchy pillow protectors from years ago, these days, there are some nice, soft, and quiet options available. Pro tip: If your pillow protector has a zipper, try leaving it slightly unzipped—about an inch—to allow for airflow and avoid ballooning while still keeping allergens at bay. Also, use a regular pillowcase on top of the protector for extra separation between you and any sleep disruptors in your pillow.

  • Choose tightly woven materials, like viscose from bamboo, for sheets and comforters. Don’t let the phrase 'tightly woven' fool you; these sheets are anything but stiff or stuffy. Viscose from bamboo is incredibly breathable and soft, making it an ideal choice for a cool, comfortable night’s sleep.

  • Add an air purifier to your space and remember to change or clean the filter regularly. Some air purifiers make it easy to know when they need changing with a phone app that will detect poor air quality and filter fullness.

  • If you suffer from severe allergies that interrupt your sleep more often than not, talk to your doctor about allergy medications that may be a good fit for you.
