How Viscose from Bamboo Sheets Are Made

By Kelsi Hicken | Aug 18, 2022

Bamboo has been used in a wide range of products all throughout history. We’ve seen it used in everything from floors and structural elements in construction as well as corsets and clothing. Bamboo viscose sheets are created by turning bamboo into a pulp, and eventually into a thread that can be spun to create a fabric. As developments in textiles and fashions continue to change, it is interesting to see how bamboo plants can play a role.

Viscose from bamboo sheets are extremely soft, and can provide the perfect temperature to help you sleep more comfortably through the night due to their breathability. So how, exactly, are they made? What goes into this process to ensure a better sleep experience?

The first step in this process starts with the bamboo plant itself.

Harvesting Bamboo

Harvesting resources to create various textiles has traditionally not been an earth-friendly endeavor. However, the way bamboo grows and is harvested has evolved and has helped it become a more environmentally conscious choice of for textiles.

Harvested bamboo in buckets

Bamboo crops may be grown on land that is normally unsuitable for forestry and other applications. More importantly, since it is a grass and not a tree, the roots stay in place and, once harvested, the chutes start to grow right after they’ve been harvested (some species even come back stronger when they’ve been cut once).

In our opinion, the best textiles are manufactured using the best practices, which means going with bamboo that is naturally grown without the use of harmful pesticides. Compare that to cotton, which uses 16% of the world's insecticides!

Manufacturing Viscose from Bamboo

Once we have the high-quality, source material, we’re ready to take the next step and convert it to bamboo viscose.

What is bamboo viscose, you say? Well, the truth is that it’s a general term used by many textile organizations and the government that classifies fabric which is derived from wood or plants, but ultimately results in a chemically enhanced fabric. From a regulatory perspective, viscose and rayon are basically interchangeable terms.

However, a lot of people hear the term “rayon” and become a little suspicious, because the process of creating that kind of material is still less than environmentally friendly.

While the entire viscose process may not be environmentally friendly, Cozy Earth strives to find factories that recycle water in a closed loop system, and follow local environmental regulations regarding pollution and energy. Also, we work with the latest factories have resources to pursue positive changes.

Making Viscose from Bamboo Sheets

All you have to do is run your hands across some viscose from bamboo sheets to discover how soft and silky they really are. Each thread is extremely soft and has amazing drape.

This is accomplished by using state-of-the-art weaving machines and high quality fiber threads. Everything from thread pattern to where and how threads are finished affects the quality of bedding.
