Small Bathroom Ideas

small bathroom decor

They say kitchens and bathrooms sell a home, but what do you do if your bathroom is small? Maybe it’s not your home’s only bathroom; maybe it’s a half bath you’re concerned about, or maybe it is your only bathroom, and you don’t know how to make it work for you and your family. Or perhaps you’re just looking for ideas for what to do when you have guests over to improve your space. Read on for our top small bathroom ideas to learn how to maximize bathroom space to its fullest potential.

Small Bathroom Storage

UNDER-SINK STORAGE

If you’re like us and find your bathroom overwhelmed with products, soaps, candles, dental care, and more, we recommend taking advantage of any under-sink space you have with an organizer or stackable storage bins. You can find these at big box stores online and around the country. They’re super useful for storing everything from cleaning products to haircare to makeup and more. We love the stackable aspect because you can store double the amount in the same space! We also appreciate Apartment Therapy’s lazy Susan idea for under-sink storage – brilliant!

OVER-THE-DOOR STORAGE

Not all small bathrooms come with – or have the space for – vanities with storage in them. And that’s okay! Another storage hack we love is over-the-door storage. You can find these organizers in a variety of colors, styles, and textures. We love the farmhouse chic look, especially the ones with metal baskets that can hold the heavy stuff.

OVER-THE-TOILET STORAGE

If you find the thought of storing your products over your toilet a bit too much to stomachdon’t worry! Today’s modern, over-the-toilet storage options include a variety of cabinets and shelves with baskets so you can keep the necessities nearby without covering them in germs.

FREESTANDING STORAGE

Cabinetschests with drawers, rolling carts, and towel ladder racks may come to mind when you think of freestanding storage. Each of these can be extremely useful in a small bathroom. Keep measurements in mind when purchasing; smaller spaces may require taller, skinnier items instead of traditionally wider storage options.

SHELVES

Floating shelves are attractive and useful. You can find baskets in a variety of materials (cotton, wicker, fabric, metal, etc.) that match your aesthetic to store your belongings.

Standing shelves may be sturdier than floating shelves, allowing you to store heavier items. Additionally, for those with things you don’t want guests to see or touch while they’re using your bathroom, standing shelves with cabinets may be a better alternative than floating shelves.

WALL CABINET OR MEDICINE CABINET

When you think of a medicine cabinet, we bet you’re picturing the old, rusted, silver and white (well, let’s be real – yellowed) cabinet with the giant mirror on the outside and the corner push-button to open it that many of our grandparents (great grandparents?) had back in the day. Today’s medicine cabinets are nothing like that! We are thankful to have a wide range of stylish and functional wall cabinets these days. The mirrors come in all shapes and sizes and are often framed in wood, steel, brushed nickel, and more. Some wall cabinets are more than just medicine cabinets, outfitted with shelves and/or towel bars, too

Small Bathroom Decor

Whether you’re looking for a spa-like, serene bathroom experience or you’d prefer something that lightens the mood, there are plenty of ways to decorate your bathroom (yes, even if it’s small!)

FRAMED PICTURES

Prints, photographs, and original artwork can all be framed and hung on the wall to brighten up your bathroom or communicate the mood of your space. We recommend opting for a frame made from moisture-resistant materials like metal to keep your pictures looking great and mold-free.

PLANTS

Add plants, like eyebrow leaf, aloe vera, hoya, succulents, and pothos, that like being in small pots to bring a burst of color and natural beauty to your bathroom. Place small potted plants on vanities or on storage pieces. Concerned about pets or kids? Look for a faux option – they can be just as nice! You can also choose hanging baskets to save counter space and fill an empty corner by the window with plants.

CANDLES

Candles have so many great uses; they can add a pop of color to an otherwise muted space, they can bring warmth to a room, and they can act as an air freshener in some cases, too. We also love candles for a small bathroom because they take up very little space and look great on both a vanity and a storage shelf.

Small Bathroom Organization

Utilizing all available space in a small bathroom is the key to success when it comes to staying organized

TOWEL HOOKS

While larger bathrooms have the option to employ wide towel bars on the wall, those with a smaller space may opt for smaller towel rings and coat hooks to hang their towels.

DRAWER ORGANIZERS

Keeping the inside of your drawers organized is something we’ve struggled with in the past, but thanks to drawer organizers, and even silverware organizers, we don’t have to struggle anymore! Drawer organizers are great for hair care, dental care, make-up, and more.

MAKEUP ORGANIZERS

If you or your partner has a strict beauty regimen, we recommend investing in a small makeup organizer to contain everything. Being able to quickly and easily find what you need is important. Stop fiddling around in drawers where everything is thrown together. A small countertop or under-the-sink makeup organizer may be just what you need.

While there are countless ways you could organize your small space, these are some of our favorite small bathroom ideas that we hope you find useful.
