Why do we take beach towels to the pool, beach, water park, or on a cruise, and have a separate towel for taking a bath or shower? Have you ever wondered, “What size is a beach towel and how does that compare to a bath towel?” or “Why are there two different types of towels for these activities and are they actually the same thing or not?” The short answer: bath towels and beach towels are two different types of towels and for good reasons. Keep reading to find out why.

What’s the Difference Between a Bath Towel and a Beach Towel?

Bath towels tend to be thick or plush and absorbent. Because of that, they may take a while to dry, which is why we hang them up after bathing and drying ourselves off. Also, they come in a variety of colors meant to match the décor of our bathrooms.

Beach towels, on the other hand, typically come in bright colors and patterns and are designed for outdoor use, meaning they can withstand sun, saltwater, chlorine, and sand exposure. They are often thinner than a bath towel and dry more quickly, so if you need to use them multiple times per day, you can easily do that. Beach towels are also longer than bath towels since their original purpose was to be placed on the sand or a lounge chair for sunbathing.

What Size is a Beach Towel? How About a Bath Towel?

Cozy Earth beach towels are 40” x 70”, which is considered “oversized” for extra comfort. Our bath towels are 30” x 58,” which is about the standard size of bath towels.

Can I Use a Bath Towel as a Beach Towel?

While you can use a bath towel as a beach towel, beach towels are easy to purchase and meant for the great outdoors, so it might be a better decision to choose a dedicated beach towel for that type of environment; however, if you find yourself in a bind, nearly any type of towel can be used in a pinch, if needed.

Care Tips for Towels

Whether you’re buying a new bath towel or beach towel (or both), it’s important that you know how to care for it to make it last. We always recommend washing towels before using them for the first time. Because our towels are made from a cotton and viscose from bamboo blend, machine wash on warm without fabric softeners. Tumble dry low and remember not to bleach these towels, as they will lose their coloring. After the first few washes, Cozy Earth towels feel even softer and become more absorbent.
