Bamboo vs. Egyptian Cotton Sheets

By Kelsi Hicken | Jan 12, 2021

Egyptian cotton sheets are typically known as the most luxurious of sheets besides silk. They are softer than normal cotton sheets due to their thread count, making you feel like royalty when you go to bed. Bamboo is also known for being unbelievably soft and temperature-regulating, which helps you get some of the highest-quality sleep possible. So, which of these two luxury bedding fabrics is better?

Softness – Egyptian cotton sheets have a very high thread count, which makes the fabric incredibly soft to the touch. Bamboo, on the other hand, is a naturally soft material when made into fabric, meaning that the thread count does not necessarily have to be as high as the thread count of cotton to be as soft to the touch.

Durability – Bamboo, while being remarkably soft, is also known for its durability. It’s less likely to pill with use, especially if you take good care of your sheets and don’t wash them with harsh materials. Meanwhile, Egyptian cotton is relatively easy to take care of, much like regular cotton, but tends to wear out faster than bamboo. People who sleep on Egyptian cotton sheets have to repurchase more often to keep the luxuriously soft feel.

Temperature-Regulation – Bamboo naturally regulates temperature and keeps you cool while you sleep, wicking away moisture and preventing your body temperature from getting trapped into the fabric fibers during the night. Egyptian cotton, true to its origin, is also temperature-regulating, so both bedding fabrics can keep even the warmest of sleepers from waking up sweating.

Environmental Impact – Bamboo is a plant that grows very, very quickly, so when it is harvested to produce fabric, it's easy to replace. Cotton, while easy to grow, typically involves a dirtier process to harvest and turn into fabric, with some of the chemicals used to treat the cotton reported as hazardous or potentially hazardous to human health.

While both fabrics are soft and temperature-regulating, bamboo wins out in the end by being durable and environmentally conscious as well. Next time you want to feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud, put away those high-thread-count cotton sheets and grab some well-made bamboo ones!
