What is the best cold-weather fabric? The answer depends on personal preference. Are you looking for breathable layers that you can add on without suffocating? Or are you just trying to find the warmest, softest material you can cuddle up with? Our guide to the best fabrics for winter will help you discover the right one for you.

CityScape Hoodie

Best Clothing Material for Winter

You don't have to bundle up in bulky fabrics to stay warm in colder weather, although you can if you want to. Our top two favorites, bamboo and cashmere, are available in nice thin fabrics that let you layer without feeling like the Michelin Man.

Bamboo

  • Thermo-Regulation: Bamboo fibers have a hollow structure that helps trap air close to the skin, acting as a natural insulator to keep you warm.
  • Breathability: The same structure also allows air to circulate, preventing you from overheating.
  • Moisture-Wicking: Bamboo wicks moisture away from your skin, which helps keep you dry and warm.
  • Softness: It is exceptionally soft and comfortable, which makes it the perfect choice for staying cozy through the winter.

Cashmere

  • Warmth: Cashmere offers excellent insulation and comes in a variety of thicknesses. Whether you choose thin or heavy knit, this lightweight material will keep you toasty throughout the day.
  • Breathability: Like bamboo, cashmere is breathable, so you won't overheat, even sitting next to the fire.
  • Softness: Cashmere is world-renowned for being luxuriously soft, making it the ultimate cozy winter fabric.

Wool

While cashmere is technically a wool, it's in a class of its own. There are other luxurious wools, though, that offer thermal insulation, moisture-wicking properties, and natural insulation. It also retains heat even when damp, so if you're caught out in the elements, you'll still feel comfortable. Merino and mercerized wool are well known for their softness and breathability.

Fleece

Fleece is a synthetic fabric known for its softness, lightweight nature, and excellent insulation. It's breathable, easy to care for, and comes in various thicknesses and textures, making it versatile for different winter activities. Fleece can be as stylish as any other fabric, as proven by our Cityscape 2.0 Hoodie, with a velvety-soft interior that will make you reach for it again and again.

Faux fur throw

Best Bedding Material for Winter

Bamboo (again!)

The benefits listed above are the reason bamboo fabric makes wonderful winter bedding. It keeps you warm without the risk of night sweats. Combine bamboo sheets with a bamboo comforter or duvet for breathable, comfortable bedding and luxurious sleep night after night.

Down Alternative

Like down, down alternative comforters and pillows are known for their exceptional insulation. They trap heat effectively, making them ideal for cold winter nights. Down alternative offers the additional benefits of relief for allergy sufferers and those with ethical concerns.

Bamboo Jersey

The ultimate blend of comfort and luxury, bamboo jersey bedding combines the benefits of bamboo bedding (breathability, temperature regulation, etc.) with a little extra stretch for great-fitting sheets that feel like you're sleeping in your favorite t-shirt. If you like cotton jersey sheets for their warmth, you'll love bamboo jersey bedding!

Faux Fur

We'd be remiss not to recommend the warmest material for winter that is arguably the coziest, too. While it lacks the breathability of bamboo, faux fur bedding, specifically our cuddle blanket, is like wrapping yourself in a nice warm hug. Keep one on the couch for cuddling up for movie night, on the bed for an extra layer on a chilly evening, or in your favorite reading nook to keep you cozy when you just can't put down your new favorite book.

Whether you're styling clothing or bedding, layering is key to being able to adjust your comfort level. You can easily add or remove layers throughout the day or night to ensure you're never too hot or cold. Ensure your base layer is breathable and moisture-wicking and build from there.
