Why Thread Count Doesn't Matter

We receive this question all the time: What thread count are your sheets? Our answer may sound like we're evading the question, but it's the truth. Thread count does not matter. While other manufacturers might claim an inflated thread count so they can raise their price on mediocre sheets, at Cozy Earth we would rather focus on making the best sheets possible. Period.

How Is Thread Count Measured?

The meaning of thread count in sheets is simply the number of threads in a square inch of fabric. The threads are counted in the length and width of an inch, so a piece of fabric that has 100 threads widthwise and 100 threads lengthwise has a thread count of 200. The story goes that the higher the thread count, the higher the quality and the softer the fabric, but that's a myth.

A thread count of more than 400 means little because that's the threshold for softness. Adding hundreds more threads won't make the sheet any softer. Independent studies have shown that most brands claiming super high thread counts are inflating the numbers by counting the fibers, or plies, that make up each thread.

Is Thread Count Important?

There are a few reasons thread count just isn't important anymore. We've seen that it can be manipulated by how the threads are counted. If the quality of the thread is average, or worse, the hand (or the feel of the fabric) will not match the expectations of the thread count. For example, cotton with a lot of short fibers included will feel rougher than cotton material made of only longer fibers, even if both fabrics have the same thread count.

What Really Matters in High-Quality Sheets?

We like to focus on quality over quantity. High-quality sheets are made of fabrics that are proven to be as durable as they are soft. Our best-selling bamboo sheets have years of research and development invested in them. We worked until we found the right recipe of fiber, yarn, weave, technology, consistency, and quality control before introducing them to the public. To prove it, our bedding is warranted against pills and defects.

We believe a great set of sheets is incredibly soft, can help you sleep comfortably at just the right temperature, and will stand the test of time. There's a reason Oprah lists our sheets among her favorite things! Try them for yourself with our 100-night sleep trial and see why our customers are raving that these truly are the world's softest sheets!
